The Most Underrated City in Europe Right Now

Everyone's going to Lisbon. You should be going here.

Lisbon is beautiful. It's also, at this point, overwhelmed. Same for Porto, Dubrovnik, Prague in summer, Amsterdam on any weekend.

The best travel experiences right now are happening in cities that are fully formed — great food, real culture, genuine architecture — but haven't yet been flattened by the weight of mass tourism.

Ljubljana, Slovenia is at the top of that list.

Why Ljubljana

The old town is pedestrianized and genuinely walkable. The castle sits on a hill above it and takes 15 minutes to reach on foot. The Ljubljanica river runs through the center and is lined with outdoor cafés that are busy with locals, not tour groups.

The food scene is exceptional — driven by a strong farm-to-table culture and one of the highest densities of good restaurants per capita in the region. A three-course dinner at a serious restaurant costs €25–40.

And crucially: it's still affordable. Hotels that would be €200/night in Lisbon are €80 here. The coffee costs €1.50.

What to do

[!tip] Ljubljana is best explored with no itinerary. Give yourself two full days and no plan beyond one dinner reservation. The city is small enough that wandering is always rewarded.

The essentials:

  • Walk up to Ljubljana Castle at sunrise — it's free and the city view is exceptional
  • Spend a morning at the Central Market, one of the best in Central Europe
  • Rent a bike and cycle along the river to Tivoli Park
  • Take a day trip to Lake Bled — 45 minutes by bus, one of the most photographed lakes in Europe

When to go

May–June and September–October. July and August are peak season and warm but busier. Winter is cold but atmospheric and almost tourist-free.

Go before everyone else figures it out. That window is closing.
